Wisdom Teeth Removal in Sydney

As we reach our late teens or early twenties, third molars; commonly known as wisdom teeth, often begin to emerge. In some cases, there may be insufficient space in the jaw, which can contribute to discomfort, crowding or infections.

At Axis Dental, we provide assessment and management of wisdom teeth within our practice, with treatment tailored to your individual needs.

Where appropriate, 3D imaging (CBCT) is used to assess the position of the teeth and surrounding structures, supporting careful planning and delivery of treatment.

When is Extraction Necessary?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but our team often recommends an assessment to manage or prevent the following:

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: When the tooth is stuck under the gum or growing at an angle against other teeth.

  • Pericoronitis: An infection of the gum tissue surrounding a partially erupted tooth. This is very typical because a lot of mouths simply do not have the space for a fully emerged wisdom tooth.

  • Tooth Crowding: To manage potential shifts in your alignment. However, too much crowding can also impede the ability to clean the area leading to potential decay of not just the wisdom teeth but also the adjacent teeth.

  • Cysts or Decay: Wisdom teeth are difficult to clean, making them prone to cavities and bone-damaging cysts.

Potential Complications & Considerations

Important Information: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure and we believe in total transparency to help you prepare for your recovery:

Typical Surgical Complications

Pain, bleeding, bruising, swelling can happen from any potential surgical procedure in varying capacities.

Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis)
Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis)

This occurs if the blood clot dislodges from the extraction site, exposing the bone.

Temporary Nerve Sensitivity

If the roots are close to the alveolar nerve, you may experience temporary numbness in the lower lip, tongue, or chin.

Sinus Communication

Upper wisdom teeth are often near the sinus cavities, and an opening may occur that requires specific healing management.

Post-Operative Infection

Some patients may require a course of antibiotics following the procedure to manage infection. *Here at axis, we do everything possible to minimise these outcomes to ensure the patients have the smoothest recovery possible
